Black and Milk were privileged to undertake the renovation of a remarkable apartment within London’s iconic Barbican Estate. Overlooking the serene lakes and exclusive residents’ gardens, the project presented a unique opportunity to craft a retreat for a newly retired couple, nestled in the romantic surroundings of their favourite Brutalist enclave.
When the couple acquired the apartment, it was a vivid time capsule of its era, with pink fabric walls and bold green accents. Embracing this exciting challenge, Black and Milk embarked on a meticulous journey to restore the apartment’s original character while infusing it with a refined modernist sensibility. Drawing inspiration from Barbican’s cultural heritage, the team’s approach balanced authenticity with contemporary design innovation.
Extensive research informed the restoration, ensuring that every element honoured the Grade II-listed status of the flat. Features found in the original apartments were carefully reimagined to preserve their essence while enhancing their functionality.
